Discover “Yukata”: Japan’s Summer Tradition

What is Yukata?

Japan has a culture full of rich traditions, and one of the most popular symbols of summer in Japan is “Yukata“. Yukata is a lightweight, casual “Kimono” that perfectly combines style and comfort, representing the essence of Japanese summer. Whether you’re going to a festival, visiting a hot spring, or walking through a traditional town, wearing Yukata is a great way to experience Japanese culture.

Yukata is a simple, unlined Kimono made from cotton or synthetic fabric. It’s designed to keep you cool during Japan’s hot and humid summer. Unlike the more formal and complicated kimono, Yukata is easy to wear and  commonly seen at summer events like festivals (Matsuri) and fireworks shows (Hanabi Taikai).

Yukata has a long history, dating back to the Heian period (794-1185). Back then, it was used as a bathrobe by nobilities. Over time, it became a popular summer outfit worn by people of all social classes, symbolizing relaxation and fun.

When and where do you wear Yukata?

Yukata is usually worn during summer festivals. These festivals are filled with traditional dances, fireworks, and food stalls. This is perfect occasions to experience Yukata culture. At hot spring resorts (Onsen), guests are often provided with Yukata to wear while exploring the inn or nearby town.

How do you wear Yukata?

Wearing a Yukata is simple but elegant:

  1. Wrap Yukata: Start by wrapping the right side over your body, then wrap the left side over the right. The left side should always be on top.
  2. Tie “Obi“: The obi is the wide belt that holds the Yukata. Wrap it around your waist and tie it in a decorative bow or knot.
  3. Accessories: Women can add a small purse (Kinchaku), hairpins (Kanzashi), and “Geta” sandals. Men usually keep it simple, focusing on wearing Geta sandals.

Yukata in Modern Japan

Today, Yukata is still a summer favourite, blending tradition with modern fashion. Some people wear it as a stylish outfit for festivals and casual outings. If you’re visiting places like Kyoto or Asakusa, you can even rent Yukata for the day without buying one.
