Autumn beauty in Japan
In Japan, autumn is a time when the leaves on trees change colors and look beautiful in red, orange, and yellow. This is called “Momiji” or “Koyo,” meaning autumn leaves. During this season, many people enjoy “Momiji-gari,” which means “hunting for autumn leaves.” But don’t worry, there’s no real hunting! It just means going out to find and enjoy the colorful leaves. Let’s learn more about this fun activity and find out where you can see the best autumn leaves in Japan.
What is Momiji-Gari?
Momiji-gari is a tradition in Japan that started a long time ago, during the Heian period (794–1185). Back then, only nobles would go outside to see the autumn leaves. Over time, it became something that everyone could enjoy. Now, each fall, people of all ages go out to parks, mountains, and temples to relax and enjoy the colorful leaves.
It’s similar to “Hanami,” which is when people enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring. Families and friends often bring snacks and lunch, sit under the trees, and have a great time while enjoying nature. The bright red and orange leaves against the blue sky make the experience even more special.

Famous Places for Momiji-Gari
Japan has many beautiful spots for Momiji-gari. Whether you like temples, mountains, or lakes, there is something for everyone.
Kyoto
Kyoto is one of the best places to see the autumn leaves in Japan. The city is full of old temples where you can walk around and enjoy the colors. A famous spot is Kiyomizu Temple, where you can look out from the wooden balcony and see the colorful leaves. Arashiyama is another great place, where you can see the leaves reflected in the river, making it look like a painting.

Nikko
Nikko, north of Tokyo, is another place famous for its autumn leaves. The Irohazaka Winding Road is a fun drive where you can see the mountains covered in bright colors. At the top, you can visit Lake Chuzenji, where the trees reflect in the water, making it look beautiful.

Hakone
If you like hot springs and autumn views, Hakone is the place to go. The Lake Ashi area has amazing views of Mount Fuji with colorful leaves around the lake. You can also take a nice walk on trails or relax in a hot spring while enjoying the fall scenery.

Enjoying the Season with Sake

After a fun day of Momiji-gari, why not end the day with some Japanese sake? Sake is a drink made from rice, and it’s been enjoyed in Japan for a long time. It’s perfect for relaxing after being outside in the cool autumn air.
If you want to try a nice, smooth sake, I recommend Senchuhassaku. Light, smooth and rich type. Elegant aroma of young banana and apple with a touch of marshmallow and milk. Very clean dry sake with elegant savory flavor. It goes well with autumn snacks like roasted chestnuts or grilled fish. Just like Momiji-gari lets you enjoy the beauty of autumn.
